The Best Part: She starts her answer with "veginas" and ends with "power." So that's a tough call.

What About Boys? Dad says he has a son too, and "[He] is still too young to do these writing assignments, but we do our best to make sure that he has an equally sound sense of self-worth. There are definitely some differences in the social baggage that our two children face, and we do try to be thoughtful of that. But for both basically we are just hopeful that we can mitigate a little of the unhealthy social patterns that they will face out in this world with some encouragements at home."

I know this is not going to be popular, but, the first line of the letter says it all. "We have Vegina's". Women are programmed at an early age to realize that that very fact will open many doors in their lives, and I'm not talking exclusively about having sex. In the dating world all a female has to do is hint that there is possibility of an intimate relationship, and males will buy them dinners, drinks, and nights out on the town, even if nothing develops. Many men have only a physical relationship on their minds and will forfeit time and money in pursuit of it even when it doesn't happen. A blind date for a woman is a win win situation. She meets him for dinner at a nice place $100), drinks afterwords $50), that's the first date. If she didn't like him, it's goodbye without any onus upon her. Though more women nowadays will offer to at least split the tab, most will just go along for the free dinner and drinks and let the guy pay.
Women are given preferential treatment in courts when it comes to custody of their children, simply because they are biologically capable of conceiving, carrying, and delivering a child. ie: we have stuff that makes us pregnant and milk in our boobs. Even in cases of joint custody, it's implied that, unless there are special circumstances, the custodial parent will be the mother.

In the job market, many places have changed their qualifications to include women even though men have to pass a more rigorous routine to qualify. ie: a fire department needed to hire women, and ALL of it's women applicants flunked the physical exam, so they took the top 40 of the group that failed, hired them and for 6 months they received a salary to "train" to justify the fact that they even got hired. So, 40 men who actually passed this test were passed over so that that the city could hire unqualified women.
Women voices all over scream for equality, yet there is no equality. The times have changed, now the system has to do the same.

You are looking way too much into this. Also, the laws of the courts have changed ALOT since the 80's. The courts rarely grant sole physical custody to any one parent. They tend to favor joint custody. This might mean the mother has more time with the children, especially if they are young, but the father still has joint custody, even if it's a couple weekends a month. In fact, even in cases where the father has been arrested and imprisoned for domestic abuse, they still prefer children have two parents in their lives. The only time a mother can just dip off with sole custody is in cases where the father doesn't fight it.

I have an 8 yr old daughter who has no idea what a "vagina" is yet. I want her to stay a little girl as long as possible, but with youngsters entering puberty earlier and earlier I guess we are going to have "that talk" sooner rather than later. Thank god we live in America and have the luxury of actually enjoying being female!

Knowing what a "vagina" and a "penis" is does not have anything to do with "the talk". Most children at least USED to be taught the difference between boys and girls. Your daughter SHOULD know what a vagina is, after all it's a part of her body and COMPLETELY normal. I knew I had a vagina, and that's what it's proper name was (though I called both genitals peepee's because that's what their job was), before I was five, because my parents wanted to make sure I never saw my body as anything bad. Refusing to even acknowledge the difference between boys and girls, to acknowledge what it is that a little girl has that makes her physically a girl, to acknowledge what the PROPER name of it is, is sexualizing it in and of itself. You are making it a dirty thing that has no purpose being known about without sex being in some way involved.

yeah, I knew it was called a vagina from the begining. My daughter is only two and she calls it a "gina" for short because vagina is kind of a mouthful (no pun intended!) She doesn't know penis yet though. She does know that Papa shaves his face but Mommy shaves her legs. She knows Mommy has boobies but Papa doesn't (although she didn't know this when she was a newborn and tried to nurse from him haha!) This isn't anything we pushed on her or fed her... she has come to these conclusions on her own just through observation (and occasionally decides to loudly announce them in public places)

I try to avoid gender specific toys or colors because I don't want to influence her, I want her to be who she is, but I do think it's important to feel comfortable and informed about one's own body. I definitely don't think that knowing you have a vagina prevents a child from "staying little". I also think it's a little surprising an 8 year old wouldn't' have already heard about it from kid's on the back of the school bus. I already knew what sex was by then! Not because of my parents but because of the older girls talking at girl scout camp!

They are just kids and kids will say the darndest things at the most innappropriate times!

My daughter was hyper-intelligent (gifted with a huge IQ...still is) and when she was even younger than this child she talked of things she knew about. Here way of identifying boys from girls when they are younger is that girls have a "vegina", as she said, and boys have a penis. Mine used to say things about that all the time and she was not parroting, nor was she coached. I just used the correct terminology because she was not a baby and deserved to be told the truth. It is age appropriate for this 8 yr. old to know the right words and also to understand her body. I started my period at age 9 and thank goodness I knew what it was because I was visiting my dad for the weekend the first time it happened. Can you imagine the panic a 9 yr. old would feel if I had not been told anything yet?

So lighten up folks. It's a girl who is a little smarter than the average bear and it's cute!
