You may remember Devendra Banhart as the folk-rocker who briefly dated Natalie Portman after she starred in his "Carmensita" video. Since their split in 2008, the 31-year-old musician has released his first album on a major label, chopped his shoulder-grazing locks and suited up (real nice). How's that for a breakup makeover? Banhart, who has always been pretty open about his personal life, recently invited Stylelist Blogger Network members Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum of StyleLikeU into his Los Angeles home for a closer look at his dapper threads.
Favoring fitted button-down shirts, tailored jackets and slim-cut corduroy pants, Banhart looks more like he's ready to teach a class of elementary school students than step inside the vocal booth. While he appears to be quite the "manly man," the "Foolin'" singer reveals to StyleLikeU that he discovered his voice dressed as a woman.
“I was only a little kid, so I didn’t have the voice yet. It just didn’t work. So I got this idea to try on one of my mom’s dresses, because it made sense to sing as a woman with this voice. Even though I couldn’t emulate [Mick Jagger], it allowed me to feel that I could sing,” he explained.
