This week saw turtles making headlines in the U.S. In Georgia, over 1,000 turtles made a slow-motion escape from a farm after vandals may have torn down fences around their ponds, reported AP. In North Carolina, a young endangered green sea turtle received surgery from a team of 10 doctors. The turtle, called Holden III, was found on a beach in southern North Carolina last month, with injuries likely caused by a boat propeller.

In Alaska, some of the state's best and largest rivers are closed to fishing after officials determined that Chinook salmon "aren't showing up in enough numbers to ensure sustainable future runs," reported AP. Officials expected the Yukon River king salmon run to be worse than last year, which was the worst in 30 years.

A black bear cub made a visit to a shopping center in Pennsylvania this weekend, prompting an evacuation of the Pittsburgh Mill Mall. Wildlife officials tranquilized and removed the bear without any injuries to bystanders, who gathered to take pictures.

Sadly, over 200 chihuahuas were removed from a central Pennsylvania home this week. AP reports that officials found the home to have unsanitary conditions and many sick and dead dogs were discovered. The rescued dogs will be treated by veterinarians and possibly put up for adoption.
