We spend lots of time focusing on what stars wear (and any wardrobe malfunctions they may have), but what about what they put on their faces? Although makeup may not seem important, it can be controversial and plenty of women won't leave home without it.
In a survey, two-thirds of British women said that heading to the office bare-faced caused them more stress than public speaking, going on a first date or enduring a job interview. 91 percent of women surveyed would rather cancel a first date altogether than go without makeup on. And in the U.S., women spend around $7 billion on cosmetics every year.
And that doesn't even include hair. The AP recently reported that in 1950, about seven percent of women dyed their hair. Today? 95 percent or more.
With all that beauty-obsession (and our own love of makeup) in mind, we're taking a look at This Week In Beauty. From this week forward, we'll be showcasing the best, worst and most interesting styles of hair, makeup and nails that we came across this week. Take a look, get inspired and vote for your faves!
BEST: Kate Beckinsale
The British actress looked stunning while on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on July 17th. We love her long, wavy hair and large earrings, which popped against her all black outfit. (Getty photo)
WORST: Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt had a major beauty blunder at San Diego Comic-Con on July 13th. The actress's ombre hair style clashed with her simple makeup and peach-colored lipstick. We would have liked to see Blunt go with louder eyeshadow or lip color, which would have given Blunt a much edgier look. (Getty photo)
BEST: Marion Cotillard
"The Dark Knight Rises" actresses looked absolutely fabulous at the European premiere on July 18th. We love Cotillard's asymmetrical hairstyle, which looked like an edgier 1920's wave. The French actress went with simple but elegant makeup, with bold peach lipstick and soft eyes. Tres belle! (Getty photo)
We were confused by Raven-Symone's as she left "Good Morning America" on July 16th. The now Broadway star's hair was short and straightened so that her layers looked jagged and bangs fell into her face. Her makeup was also less than stellar, have gone with very dark eyebrows and bold eyeliner with a near-white lipstick, that created a very washed-out effect on Symone's face. Next time Raven! BEST: Ginnifer Goodwin
We love Ginnifer Goodwin's classy makeup look at San Diego Comic-Con on July 14th. The lady really knows how to play up false eyelashes! With well-shaped brows (brown NOT black) and glossy, nude lips, the actress looked elegant and natural, rather than over made-up, which can be a difficult look to achieve with false eyelashes. WORST: Jessica Biel
We were very disappointed in Jessica Biel's Comic-Con look. The normally beauty-licious star looked washed-out and strangely girly in a sheer top (we can see her bra!) and a half pony tail. We would have preferred to see Biel with bright lipstick or a completely pulled up 'do. Also with a less-sheer top...
BEST: Anne Hathaway
The actress looked absolutely stunning at the European premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises" in London on July 18th. We loved the actress's dress which came accessorized with a large, flowered collar. Hathaway complimented her collar with small stud earrings and simple makeup. The star went with a strong brow and pink lip look, which (together with her adorable pixie cut) completed her ethereal ensemble. (Getty photo)
WORST: Sharni Vinson
Australian actress (and star of Step Up 3) looked a little too orange at the premiere of "Step Up Revolution" in LA on July 17th. Someone should have told Vinson to hold the spray tan, especially since it clashes terribly with her ombre hair. #ombremistakes (Getty photo)
BEST: Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington looked elegant at Comic-Con on July 14th. The actress went with a bold, orange lip and simple eye makeup, which popped against her leather top and dark brown hair. That's how it's done! (Getty photo)
WORST: Ashley Tisdale
Someone needs to tell these actresses when to stop spray tanning! Ashley Tisdale was in a similar situation as Sharni Vinson when she appeared at the "Step Up Revolution" LA premiere on July 17th looking a more orange than natural. We like the actress's blossom of purple ombre in her hair, but all in all we say: stop spray tanning! (Getty photo)
BEST: Julia Voth
Canadian actress and model Julia Voth looked gorgeous at the LA premiere of "Step Up Revolution." We love Voth's necklaces which looked summery and exotic and also matched the color of her eyes. As for her makeup, Voth went for simple pink lips and a slightly smokey eye. (Getty photo)
WORST: Deborah Ann Woll
We think that "True Blood" actress Deborah Ann Woll is fabulous, but we don't like her look at this year's Comic-Con on July 14th. It's hard to pull off the milkmaid, braid look, especially when you have bright red hair and lips and are wearing an emerald green dress. In this situation, it's a little too much. (Getty photo)
