'American Idol': New Judges Every Year?

A Rotating 'Idol' Judge Panel?

"American Idol" could get a facelift each year with new judges joining the Fox singing competition series.

According to journalists at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, during the panel for "So You Think You Can Dance," Nigel Lythgoe, a judge and executive producer on "Dance" and executive producer of "Idol," said a new judge panel each year could be the future of "American Idol."

Lythgoe's "Idol" plans come after Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler announced their departure from the series after two seasons. Veteran judge Randy Jackson is rumored to be leaving and taking on more of a mentor role.

Mariah Carey is the only replacement for the "American Idol" Season 12 judge panel that has been announced; there's no word on who else will take a seat alongside the Coca-Cola cups.

Lythgoe, who is currently in contract negotiations to return to "Idol," said he expects to be back for Season 12 of the series.
