'Cake Boss' Finale: Buddy And His Mom Break Down Over Her ALS Diagnosis

Posted: Updated:

Rather than wait to break the news on his show "Cake Boss" (Mon., 9:30 p.m. ET on TLC), Buddy Valastro opened up to People. There, he revealed that his mother Mary had been diagnosed at 67-years old with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gerhig's disease.

Knowing in advance what was coming, though, did nothing to lessen the emotional impact of seeing the family come together over the diagnosis on the season premiere. Already, Mary has begun struggling with some of the most basic tasks of life, like being able to write.

"You come first, no matter how busy, no matter what’s going on," Buddy told his mother in an emotional scene that saw them both break down. "I will stop the world to come to you."

It was easy to see how family is at the heart of Carlo's Bakery, as everyone rallied around Mary with love and support as she struggled to come to terms with her diagnosis. There is no known cure for ALS.
