"No matter how bad a situation may seem there is always the chance that good may come from it." That's the first line of an update on CalebMedley.com announcing the birth of Hugo Jackson Medley, whose parents were in the Aurora, Colo. movie theater where last week's shooting massacre took place.

Every story to emerge from the shooting is harrowing, but that of Katie and Caleb Medley offers some hope in the face of horror. Hugo, the couple's first child, was born Tuesday morning shortly after 7 a.m., and the University of Colorado Hospital released the photos of him and mom on Tuesday night.

The AP reports that, while Katie escaped injury in the shooting, Caleb, who was shot in the eye, has had three surgeries and is in a medically induced coma.

The couple's friend Michael West told ABC News that the baby is "loud and full of life" -- "just like his daddy." He also told ABC that being a father was "all [Caleb] would talk about" before the attack, and said in a separate interview with CBS: "He needs to get better, because he needs to be a dad. "

An update posted on the Facebook page "Support Caleb" Tuesday night said:

Katie took Hugo down to the ICU hours after birth to share a moment with her husband Caleb (who is still in a medically induced coma). Caleb showed signs that he could recognize that Katie and his newborn son were with him in the room. His blood pressure rose, his pulse rose, and he was squeezing Katie’s hand harder than he has since he’s been in the hospital.

According to CalebMedley.com, a support page set up by West, Caleb's right eye and some of his brain tissue have been removed. Since Medley doesn't have health insurance, he could face an astronomical hospital bill when his procedures are done; "Caleb and Katie will be struggling with these hospital bills for the rest of their lives," West writes.

However, Caleb is a stand-up comedian, and the comedy community on Twitter and beyond have taken his cause to heart, encouraging donations to help him pay his medical bills.

The AP reports that Caleb's family has already received more than $100,000 in donations to defray the costs of care.
