WESTERLY, R.I. -- A pilot was saved by his 8-year-old son after his plane crashed off Rhode Island's Block Island this week.
Pilot Mark Simmons was hired to assist in an elaborate marriage proposal. On Monday, Simmons flew his small plane towing a banner that read, “Michelle will you marry me? Mike.” But Mike never got to pop the question -- an engine malfunction forced Simmons to make an emergency landing.
According to ABC News, Simmons' 8-year-old son was the only person to respond to his Mayday calls.
The young boy then sent a message to the Coast Guard, playing a crucial role in his father’s rescue.
U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Controller John Harland told The Westerly Sun the boy helped them pinpoint his father's location.
Luckily, Simmons was not seriously injured, authorities said.
In fact, on Tuesday, the pilot taught his son a valuable lesson about not giving up -- he completed the marriage proposal flight that had been cut short the day before.
As for a happy ending, Mike, the man behind the proposal plans, told ABC News that his girlfriend said 'yes.'
