Blur's Damon Albarn On The Olympics: 'It Feels Like You're Drowning In Commercialism'

British Rock Legend Blasts Olympic 'Commercialism'

Blur may be headlining an Olympic closing ceremony gig in Hyde Park, but that doesn't mean frontman Damon Albarn supports the "commercialism" behind the two-week spectacle.

"I'm just anti the capitalism of it all," Albarn told The Sun. "We're not doing the gig for the corporate side of the Olympics, we're doing it for the human beings... It feels like you're drowning in commercialism at the moment. It’s depressing."

However, there is one Olympic event that even Albarn wouldn't mind sitting in on: "But I am into the table tennis so I would like to get some tickets for that. It would be an inspiration to see it at that level."

Blur will be supported by New Order, The Specials and Bombay Bicycle Club at the August 12 Hyde Park concert. In April Albarn told The Guardian the band could disband after the gig, which marks the end of the 2012 London Olympics. The band recently released a new single entitled "Under the Westway" earlier this month, but Albarn has quashed speculation an album of fresh material will follow, because he wants to leave on a high note.

When asked if Blur would play live again after Hyde Park, Albarn told The Guardian, "no, not really."
