College Girls Waiting Longer To Have Sex: Her Campus Survey

Despite continued assertions that the millennial generation is over-sexualized, a recent study conducted by Her Campus found that many girls are waiting until college to lose their virginity.

The study, entitled the "Ultimate Girl Survey," was conducted over the 2011-2012 school year and pulled data from 677 different academic institutions. Some 2,589 college women between the ages of 17-23 participated.

The survey found that:

- 69 percent of those surveyed said that they didn’t lose their virginity until they turned 18, with 43 percent still holding their v-card. 12.3 percent of responses lost their virginity at 17, while 9.5 percent said their first sexual experience occurred at 16.

- 52 percent of respondents said that they had hooked up with 10 or fewer guys. Hooking up is defined in this case as making out or more.

- 41.3 percent of straight respondents admitted to kissing someone of the same gender. Among the reasoning for those who did? “I was curious,” “it was a dare,” “my friends and I did it as a joke,” and “guys think it’s hot.”

- For 69.1 percent of those surveyed, [partners were] fewer than three. Nearly 60 percent of responses indicated to sleeping with nobody, or just one person.

The survey also asked how students and parents discussed sex. About 30 percent of participants said their parents were naive to their sexual activity, whereas 50 percent confirmed that their parents were aware.

“We’re seeing that by nature, college women are curious about sex and their sexuality,” said Her Campus Co-Founder Stephanie Kaplan in an email to The Huffington Post. “We’re also seeing that they are smart enough to know the risks involved and are experimenting carefully.”

In an interview with SELF Magazine, Ph.D. and senior research associate at Guttmacher Linda Lindberg stated that the results must be thought of as specific to that particular group of young American women.

"The delay in first sex in the HerCampus.com survey seems high, which may be due to selectivity in who is interviewed," she said. "However, it's not surprising that girls attending college wait to have sex later than other girls, for many reasons."

The survey is part one of the whole "Ultimate Girl Survey." The data for the second survey released focuses on sexting, while the rest of the survey results have yet to be revealed.
