Ohio Storm 2012: Severe Weather Moves Across State

Much of Ohio was bracing for severe storms Thursday afternoon, as heavy winds and hail were expected to hit the Buckeye State.

WBNS-10TV reported that severe thunderstorm watches are in effect for central Ohio until 10PM tonight. They wrote, "Strong to severe storms will continue to develop this afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front. Our biggest concerns are for damaging winds and large hail, although we can’t rule out an isolated tornado."

According to the Columbus Dispatch, "A wind gust of 55 mph was recorded at the Delaware Municipal Airport, with reports of large hail elsewhere. Numerous trees were reported downed in Delaware."

They also note that, "the National Weather Service is not calling this storm a derecho."

Just before 5PM, the National Weather Service issued the following Special Weather Statement:

BRACKEN...ROBERTSON...EASTERN PENDLETON AND MASON COUNTIES THROUGH
515 PM EDT...

AT 448 PM EDT...RADAR INDICATED A STRONG THUNDERSTORM NEAR NEAVE...
MOVING EAST AT 35 MPH.
WIND GUSTS TO 50 MPH AND ONE HALF INCH DIAMETER HAIL ARE POSSIBLE
WITH THIS STORM.
SOME LOCATIONS THAT MAY BE AFFECTED INCLUDE...BROOKSVILLE...
WASHINGTON...MAYSVILLE...LEWISBURG AND ABERDEEN.
ALSO...BERLIN...SANTA FE...PETRA...POWERSVILLE...WOOLCUTT...
HITTVILLE...PARINA AND STONEWALL ARE NEAR THE PATH OF THIS STRONG
THUNDERSTORM.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports:

“The risk for widespread damaging winds will increase from midday to mid-afternoon from Indiana and Ohio across Pennsylvania, southeast New York, into western Massachusetts and Connecticut,” the U.S. Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, said in a severe weather outlook.
