13 Americans Who Think They're Watching The Olympic Opening Ceremony Live (TWEETS)

NBC chose not to air the Opening Ceremony live today. Instead, they're showing it on tape delay, so it can appear in the United States in primetime.

But not everyone got the memo. Some thought that the Opening Ceremony was being broadcast to them live on NBC.

It's certainly possible to get into the event and forget it's not live, but that doesn't mean you have to tweet about it. Nonetheless, these 13 people did, while the coverage aired in the U.S. from 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on.

I have yet, to see any of the networks not screw up the Olympics. I'd rather see it all in a Pay per View venue without all the BS.

That would be the core audience that NBC was trying to cater to. Ignorant in presuming that it was live at the U.S. prime time hours which is five hours earlier from New York to London.

It's common sense people, if you do a little bit of math, you'll realize that prime time in the USA is the middle of the night in the UK... Duh....!

While most of the rest of the world — or at least Europe — was watching the ceremony live, U.S. audiences were held hostage by NBC, which holds the rights to the games here. Rather than broadcasting the biggest event of the Games live as it happened, NBC decided it would air the ceremony on a tape delay, to capture a larger overall audience.

Now, tape delays are nothing new, but they do seem archaic at a time when online video and social media bring an air of immediacy to live events. The existence of the NBC Olympics Twitter account is evidence of this, but the account seems totally misused in this case: NBC live tweeted the whole ceremony, with no apparent sense of irony around the fact that its target audience couldn’t actually watch the events it was describing. Instead of building excitement around the ceremony, and engaging with its viewers, all NBC ended up doing was frustrating its audience — the people who care most about watching the thing.

So really, how bad was NBC’s strategy around the U.S. broadcast of the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony in London? So bad that Mark Benioff, chairman and CEO of Salesforce-dot-com, and someone who should really know better, tweeted out a link to a pirated live stream of the ceremony taking place in London.

this is part of the reason I don't do TV. Who needs it when I can get live streaming on just about anything out there. I also enjoyed watching the British advertisements.

It's greedy "people" like NBC who are helping TV broadcasting become obsolete. Good on Mark B. for tweeting the link.

Yep, tried to watch live in NBC's site and even though Comcast owns NBC Universal and I have Comcast internet, I was told that I needed a TV subscription to watch live online.  This is after the FCC fined Comcast for not offering internet only specials so as not to use their ownership of the company to try and force people to get cable.  Thanks FCC, you can put this in your fail log.

I'm really surprised they were able to turn their TV channel from FOX.

...got a neighbor still tuned to FOX --waiting for the "real" Olympics to start.

I didn't get a memo! You mean it wasn't live. After the Janet Jackson nipple exposure thing, I'm sure they feared that Mr Bean might streak in part of the ceremony, and if they delayed the broadcast, they would have enough time to blur out his "special purpose".

Are you sure? I saw on the BBC it was not live in Australia either.
