Christina Battimelli, Staten Island Nursing Student, Killed In Late Night Car Crash, Police Unsure Of Cause

Police Struggle To Figure Out Cause Of Deadly Car Crash

Police cannot figure out what caused a 21-year-old nursing student to lose control of her car and crash into a pole.

Christina Battimelli, a student at St. Paul’s School of Nursing, was killed when she crashed into a utility pole in a Staten Island, N.Y. residential neighborhood at at 2:25 a.m. Saturday, according to police. Her uncle said she was returning home from visiting a friend.

The Staten Island Advance reports Battimelli struck a parked van before veering into the pole on College Avenue. She wasn't wearing a seat belt, and was driving fast enough for the car she was driving to bounce away from the pole after hitting it.

A resident on the street told the Advance that his wife thought she was OK as Battimelli was reportedly conscious and screaming at first. Police did not believe it had anything to do with texting or a cell phone distraction, since her phone was inside of her purse. Alcohol has also been ruled out as a factor.

Battimelli was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, the New York Daily News reports.
