For most couples, getting engaged is typically described with words like thrilling, joyous, and magical. For these five star couples, however, the defining word is: awkward.

Below, we celebrate some of the bizarre ways stars have popped the question. Click through the slideshow and tell us: are these, er, unorthodox proposals an attempt to grab headlines?

  • Chad Ochocinco to Evelyn Lozada

NFL player Chad Ochocinco (now Johnson again) proposed to "Basketball Wives" Evelyn Lozada while playing video games. Lozada told Yahoo! that a jeweler came to their home, where she picked out a ring -- still unaware they were getting engaged -- and Ochocinco said, "Alright, so we're engaged."

  • Howard Stern to Beth Ostrosky

Radio personality Howard Stern made girlfriend Beth Ostrosky strip down to her birthday suit before he proposed in 2007. Stern asked if she wanted her Valentine's Day gift, and when she said yes, he asked her to undress. Ostrosky hesitated, but eventually bared it all and Stern revealed a 5.2-karat diamond ring -- then he told his entire radio audience about the proposal the next day. The pair told the public to prepare for a long engagement, but then tied the knot in 2008.

  • Jeff Miranda to Snooki

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi received an awkward proposal from ex-boyfriend Jeff Miranda in 2010: he posed shirtless for the cover of Steppin' Out magazine with the headline "Will you marry me?" plastered across the page. Snooki wasn't ready for the housewife lifestyle, so she tweeted later that week that she was still single and not marrying any time soon. That changed this year when new boyfriend Jionni LaValle -- who is also her ex-boyfriend's cousin -- dropped to one knee and presented Snooki with a more than 5-karat ring.

  • LL Cool J to Simone Smith

Rapper LL Cool J proposed to his high school sweetheart Simone Smith (then Johnson) while driving in a Jeep. He didn't have a ring, and didn't even use the expected "Will you marry me?" Instead, the rapper asked Simone, "Do you wanna do this?" She agreed and they married in 1995.

  • David Hasselhoff to Hayley Roberts

David Hasselhoff has reportedly tried multiple times to get girlfriend Hayley Roberts to say yes to a proposal, but each time, she's said no. Maybe that's because he once proposed to her in a dressing room. The "Baywatch" star and his main squeeze aren't planning to marry any time soon anyway, they say. Though the Hof and Roberts have posted four photos of "proposals" in different place to Twitter, Hasselhoff denied engagement rumors to People.com earlier this year.
