Day 4 of the 2012 London Summer Olympics ushered in some big wins with the U.S. surpassing China in the total number of medals. However, China still holds the lead in gold.

The U.S. beat out Russia and Romania for the gold in gymnastics, winning the top prize in gymnastics for the first time since 1996. The team, composed of Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, scored 183.596 overall, beating Russia's 178.530 and Romania's 176.414.

Michael Phelps narrowly missed out on gold when Chad Le Clos of South Africa reached the wall a split-second before the 27-year-old in the men's 200m butterfly. Phelps previously won the race in the last two Olympics.

Tuesday's events include qualifying rounds in archery, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, field hockey, handball, rowing, sailing, soccer, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and water polo -- plus medal events in canoeing, diving, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, judo, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.
