An Olympics bus hit and killed a cyclist near Olympic Park in east London on Wednesday evening.
According to London Metropolitan Police, the 30-year-old man was struck and killed about a mile north of the Olympic Stadium at 7:45 p.m. local time.
Ambulance units and a helicopter were dispatched, but the bicyclist, who the IOC said was not an Olympic athlete, was pronounced dead on the scene about half an hour after the incident, the BBC reports.
NBC News interrupted volleyball coverage to announce that a media bus had been involved in an accident that killed a cyclist. Deadspin posted footage of the interruption, in which commentator Al Michaels made the announcement.
An AFP report from the scene of the Olympics bus accident described "a man's legs protruding from under the double decker bus." The shuttle buses regularly transport journalists between the games complex in east London and hotels in central London.
The Associated Press reports that no one aboard the bus was reported injured, and no arrests were made in connection with the accident.
According to the AFP, 30 soldiers who had been carrying out security duties at the Olympic Park rushed to the scene after the accident, bringing traffic to a standstill.
