Sandusky Charity, Second Mile, Drops Plans For Internal Probe, Plans To Shut Down In Months

UPDATE Aug. 3, 2012: Representatives from the Second Mile told the Associated Press that it will be able to hold on for only a few more months and plans to transfer assets and programs need to happen soon.

PHILADELPHIA -- A charity founded by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is calling off an internal investigation in the wake of his child sex abuse scandal.

The Second Mile wants to turn over its assets to Houston-based Arrow Child & Family Ministries Inc. Lawyers for some people who say Sandusky abused them are opposed.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/QkPP4K ) the chief executive of the Second Mile, David Woodle, says the organization is dropping plans for the probe into what past leaders knew and when. Woodle says the organization is ''in a different situation now'' because it's ''getting ready to go out of business.''

Woodle says the charity will continue to cooperate with all external investigations.

Sandusky was convicted of 45 criminal counts. He has maintained his innocence and awaits sentencing.

His "internal probe" is being called off? I bet his victims wish they'd had the same opportunity. Why should he be allowed to move his money around? I think all of those assets should be put into the victim's fund for therapy and any other kind of help they need. If they're allowed to transfer those assets, will the money be available in the event he loses civil trials (and he will) for restitution?

There were rumors to that effect, but all the evidence points to Sandusky being a lone wolf. He was apparently only interested in hos own personal gratification

there are several sportswriters who have alluded to the potential that Sanduksy was fronting more than his own agenda... and that is reinforced by the lack of information pertaining the disappearance of the DA and, more importantly, the data on his official hard drive..... following the 1998 incident

Paterno loses his statue, wins, and reputation and Sandusky's 2nd Mile gets off the hook. The organization that was warned in 2001 about Sandusky by Penn State and blew it off. The organization that was warned several times to stop letting Sandusky take boys to the Penn State showers. The organization that Sandusky fooled from 1997-2011 but, as the media claims, couldn't do the same to an old man with a bad lung in his 70's. The organization that Freeh didn't question because they wouldn't cooperate so he went after Penn State emails and started jumping to conclusion. They should've been disbanded after 2001 - who's to say they know what's going on elsewhere with the kids involved in that program.

They aren't getting off the hook, I think. There will still be external investigations. They have only dropped their own internal investigation. The whole thing is shutting down anyway, and then there will be no employees, so who would there be to conduct it?

That's no reason to go after Joe. 2nd Mile clearly had the chance to put a stop to Sandusky once they were warned. They failed to protect kids and Joe takes the hit. They weren't even Penn State football players. I think the administration failed to adequately protect those kids but Joe told his superiors and then went back to coaching and based on what they all knew at time, I don't think any of them realize the severity of the problem. But it's the Athletic Director that should take full blame and not use Joe as a scapegoat. He's the one that should have had Sandusky monitored at all times while on campus if they had any doubts about his character.

not until the civil lawsuits are over... they have assets that were estimated to be about $9M not too long ago, including their endowment and real estate holdings....

Sure however this alleged charity started by Sandusky will always be known for this outrage of a pedaphile. I have no doubt that the people who volunteered to help with this had the best intentions, it's unfortunate the founder had sadistic intentions!

Are there any boys left at the Second Mile.?Was there an interim Board put in + who remains on the Board.? How much money is involved?
Names please of those who are making the decision re transfer.
I would support that the money get given to those who were last to leave the establishment + to the victims.

Transfer "programs"? What does "programs" mean in TSM code language? Does that mean it took them this long to find another charity/ministry playground full of kids for their wealthy pedophile patrons to play with and abuse? The state or FBI or both need to issue a cease and decist order, lock the place down, impound the money, collect ALL the records to compile and compare names, money and investigate and connect the dots with known or suspicious pedophiles. I'll bet whomever paid some professionals to off Ray Gricar is a TSM player.
