Romney On Veepstakes: 'I Give You Nothing On That'

In an interview with CNN that aired Sunday, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney dodged the question of who he has in mind for a vice presidential pick, declining to say whether he’d made up his mind yet.

“I have nothing for you on the vice presidential question,” Romney said. “I give you nothing on that. But I can assure that by the third day of the Republican convention we will nominate a Republican VP.”

Romney has been cagey about his possibilities for a running mate while on the campaign trail. Candidates typically don't announce their choices until the days leading up to the political conventions, though most observers agree that Romney's short list includes Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Rather than address the veepstakes, Romney instead spent most of the sit-down interview with CNN criticizing President Barack Obama on the economy. The former Massachusetts governor said the Federal Reserve shouldn’t inject more stimulus money to boost the economy, declaring Obama’s original stimulus package a failure.

“They saw the results. They were told unemployment would stay below 8 percent. It has not been below 8 percent since,” Romney said. “His approach of just spending money on government programs did not create jobs that Americans are looking for. So the idea of doing the same thing again and expecting a different result is, as famously said, the definition of insanity.”
