The truth is that powerful, successful men lie and they are used to doing so. Until confronted with absolute proof to the contrary, they will stick to their position. E.g. Nixon, Clinton. An interesting question is whether future tax returns by Romney will open him up to more problems. If elected, he might get caught up with major issues while in office.

It's actually a good thing that Mitt won the nomination so we can get a peek into how the rich because rich by gaming the system. Things like turning a $17k/yr contribution to an IRA can suddenly become worth over $100 million.

This issue is taking a large toll on an already weak candidate.

Obama is over 70% victory probablilty at 538.

538 called every state and DC correctly in 2008, except Indiana, which eventually went for Obama.

538 is almost never wrong, and they are right on the money now.

Obama will take the election with over 300 electors.

Something is up...the GOP must think that they have this election in the bag, they are cheating, are not going to count certain votes, keep certain people from voting.. SOmething is up, no WAY would they just go along with this, if they weren't already sure of the outcome.....We need to start paying CLOSE attention to this.....

The internal polling for Republicans must be damming.

Tea Party supporters and religious zealots in the base of the Republican Party don't care, but swing voters and independents do care, which is why Romney is tanking in all the swing states.

John McCain, the previous Republican nominee, saw 23 years of Romney's income tax return and he will not come forward to state Romney paid INCOME taxes. Even Romney won't state that he paid INCOME taxes.

Not only did Romney ship American jobs overseas and raid pension funds at Bain Capital, he apparently didn't pay anything in income tax for several years in support of our troops.

Conservatives don't want the truth to come out because it destroys their narrative about the "overtaxed" superwealthy "job creators" that stuff their campaign coffers.

Imagine how bad it must be if Romney is willing to go to the wall to make sure we don't find out what is in these tax returns. McCain was not harassed at all for showing only two years but he has always been the darling of the beltway media. I'm glad that Reid is playing hardball with these thugs.

I could almost understand him taking a philosophical stance about refusing to release them...if he hadn't already released 23 years worth to McCain 4 years ago.

I don't understand why he was OK with it back then and won't do it now. That makes even LESS sense than running for president with idea that they won't have to be released...which everybody know is the way it works.

Sorry, Ed, what represents itself as the Republican party these days no longer listens to reasonable moderate Republicans. It only caters to the most right wing extreme views of its base and will not listen to sound reasoning. Your advice has fallen upon deaf ears. Also, Mitt is worse nightmare for your party as he no grounding and stands for nothing. He will say or do whatever it takes to get the Oval Office and if that means stand on all fours kowtowing to the most extreme elements, then so be it. As his top campaign operative described him, the man's an Etch-A-Sketch, no insult to the makers of this popular children's toy.

He'll release them just as soon as his tax people retroactively fix them, just as his tax forms were reportedly retroactively fixed to reflect dual residency in both Utah and Massachusetts so that he could claim eligibility to run for governor in Massachusetts -- which requires seven years' prior residency. Until the truth was uncovered, Willard (through his spokesman -- the same one he still employs) maintained that he always had dual residency. He lied, persistently and perversely, even as he stonewalled efforts to bring the truth to light. The Rachel Maddow Show featured a segment on this.

All of this past skullduggery reveals him to be a compleat scoundrel. His character and his tactics seem to have changed little.
