Add "Flight" to your very early list of possible Oscar contenders. The drama -- about a pilot (Denzel Washington) who successfully crash lands his airplane after a mid-air catastrophe, only to be questioned in the wake of the incident -- will close out the 50th New York Film Festival on Oct. 14.
"Flight," which opens nationwide on Nov. 2, marks director Robert Zemeckis' first foray into live-action filmmaking since "Cast Away" in 2000.
“Robert Zemeckis has shown his diversity as a storyteller in comedies, dramas and has skillfully translated narratives into special effect environments," Rose Kuo, executive director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, said in a statement. "It is a pleasure to see him bring to life this complicated, tragic-comic portrait of a man in crisis, with an exceptional and poignant performance by Denzel Washington.”
Don Cheadle, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood and Melissa Leo all co-star in "Flight."
The New York Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 28 through Oct. 14, is one of the most prestigious festivals in the country. Last year, the festival debuted a working cut of Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" as well as "My Week With Marilyn."
