Everybody's favorite Olive Garden reviewer will receive a major journalism award, BuzzFeed reported on Friday.
Marilyn Hagerty, who has been a journalist for more than 60 years, received instant Internet fame after the 86-year-old wrote a review of the new Olive Garden in Grand Forks, N.D. The review went viral. In true Internet-sensation fashion, Hagerty appeared on national morning shows and was interviewed by local press.
Hagerty, who has been a reporter for the The Grand Forks Herald for the past thirty years, has done far more with her journalism career than pen the Olive Garden review for which she is now famous. Honoring her long career, she will be rewarded with this year's Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media. Neuharth founded USA Today, and Hagerty was his first editor when he embarked on his career 65 years ago as a reporter for his college newspaper.
"Those same high principles that Marilyn preached as a young college editor 65 years ago define and distinguish her extraordinary and enduring career," Neuharth said.
She will be presented with the award in a ceremony at the University of South Dakota in October.
