USA Basketball Defeats Argentina, 109-83, To Advance To Olympics Gold Medal Game (PHOTOS)

LONDON -- LeBron James turned away from his teammates gathered in the center circle and waved to the fans as if to say: "See you Sunday."

Right where the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team always expected to be, in the gold medal game, against the opponent it figured to see again.

"Anything less than this would have been unsatisfying for us," Carmelo Anthony said. "We believe that we could get here, and we're here now. We got one game left."

Kevin Durant scored 19 points, James and Anthony added 18 apiece, and the U.S. turned on its slamming-and-shooting spectacle in the second half to overwhelm Argentina for the second time in three games, 109-83, in the semifinals Friday night.

The U.S. will play Spain on Sunday, a rematch of the Americans' victory four years ago for the gold medal in Beijing.

"I think it's only right," James said. "Everyone said that this is the game they wanted to see. We look forward to it. We're happy as a team we're able to be back in this position. We've got to defend, we've got to rebound, we've got to share the ball."

The Americans have said they believe this team is better than the '08 squad, and they are certainly more potent - with a chance to end up outscoring he original Dream Team in 1992.

"You have three scorers on this team who get blistering hot if they make two shots in a row," Kobe Bryant said. "I've never seen anything like it."

In the third straight Olympic semifinal between the U.S. and Argentina, the Americans kept pulling ahead only to see the Argentines climb back in - until James and Durant finally put them away for good.

Manu Ginobili scored 18 points for Argentina, which plays Russia for the bronze medal on Sunday.

Argentina hung around until early in the second half, just as it did Monday in the final game of pool play.

And just like that night, the Americans hit them with a wave of dunks and 3-pointers in the third quarter that turned it into a romp.

While not quite as explosive as their 42-17 period in Monday's 126-97 win, this one had just as many highlights.

Ahead by only four after Ginobili opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, the Americans pulled away with James' strength and Durant's shot.

Durant made two 3-pointers in an 8-0 spurt that pushed the lead to 13, and when Argentina got back within eight, the NBA's MVP and runner-up teamed up to blow it open.

James had a basket and drove for a powerful dunk while being fouled. Durant followed with consecutive 3-pointers, James tipped in a miss, and suddenly the lead was 19, 72-53, with 1:30 left in the period.

"We had a great run in the first half," Ginobili said. "We started the third very well. And then we blinked."

It became a runaway in the fourth when Anthony hit three 3-pointers in 42 seconds, the American bench spilling onto the floor as he strutted back to midcourt after the last one made it 93-64.

Otherwise, there was little celebrating for the Americans during or after the game.

The party they want can't come until Sunday afternoon.

"It's been a fun ride, but we want to compete on Sunday," forward Kevin Love said.

The U.S. beat Spain 118-107 in the Beijing final, pulling away after leading by just four with about 2 1/2 minutes left. The Spanish are ranked second in the world behind the Americans, and have much more size with brothers Pau and Marc Gasol.

"We'll have a difficult challenge with Spain because they're really big. But they'll have a challenge with us, too," U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Bryant finished with 13 points, hours after seeing his chances strengthen for another title with the Los Angeles Lakers.

This glowing group of bright stars couldn't even make basketball's biggest news Friday, that coming when Orlando finally traded All-Star center to Dwight Howard to the Lakers in a four-team deal. U.S. swingman Andre Iguodala was part of it, getting sent from Philadelphia to Denver.

Howard was supposed to be here, forced to pull out because of back surgery. Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Derrick Rose also were lost to injuries.

The Americans seem just fine without them.

The climb back to the top of the basketball world after Argentina beat them in the 2004 semifinals was a difficult one for the Americans.

Staying there seems inevitable.

Though the Americans did have a close game against Lithuania, they are averaging 116.7 points - right behind the Dream Team's record of 117.3 - with a low of 98.

They've defended only as much as they felt they needed to - and that hasn't been much - but came out locked in on that end Friday.

Durant blocked Luis Scola's shot into the U.S. bench, then stole his pass for an uncontested dunk and a 15-4 lead. A 3-pointer by Bryant made it 18-6, but Argentina ran off nine straight points to get within three, and the U.S. lead was just 24-19 after one.

With the U.S. leading by three early in the second, Krzyzewski inserted James, Bryant and Durant together, and James quickly took over the game. Powering to the basket and daring any Argentine player to get in front of him, he scored seven straight points, turning a 30-27 edge into a 10-point lead.

The Argentines hung in behind their 3-point shooting, Ginobili beating the buzzer with their fifth of the period to pull within 47-40 at the half.

Scola and Carlos Delfino added 15 points apiece for Argentina, trying to go out with a third straight Olympic medal for its "Golden Generation," the group of veterans who helped the Argentines replace the Americans atop the basketball world for a time.

But they haven't been able to find enough young stars to mix in with their old-timers, while the Americans have blended in youngsters like Durant and Russell Westbrook from their team that won the world basketball championships two years ago.

ajackson, NBC has been so reluctant to show any of the "money" sports live AGAIN because it needs to validate the prices and ratings it promised when the commercials were sold. The only time we see the "money" events live in prime time is when the Olympics happens to to be held during one of the 4 primary US time zones (Atlanta, Salt Lake City, and Vancouver going back 20 years). It will always be that way as long as companies are paying BILLIONS for the right to air video of the Olympics live and/or first.

Amen. I have no interest in watching pros play in the Olympics. And it does not matter that other nations do it. What better achievement than to have college players -- amateurs -- win against ringers. The great Jim Thorpe must be spinning in his grave - and his disqualification was for a totally different sport than what his gold medals were for.

This is basically like watching the Harlem Globetrotters without the clowning--the only element that keeps the show from being incredibly boring. I usually don't go for the cheap laugh, but when the most entertaining moment of the tournament was when a guy given to flopping got punched in the groin, it pretty much sums up how fun this was to watch.

7 of the last 8 actually. And usually just as skewed as the men's scores since the dream teams started playing. Yet another reason the whole "pros shouldn't be allowed to play" argument doesn't make sense.

As for people not talking about it, I am a bit surprised about the lack of news stories being printed, but I get it on a fan level. Not saying it's right, just saying I get it. Curiously it's pretty much the opposite in volleyball and soccer (at least in America).

I know it sounds like we have not missed much but we would still like to see at least one game and the women's basketball, including the finals, was never shown on our local channel. Don't want to rehash the whole 2012 team vs. dream team debate but here is some statistical food for thought:
1992 team (through 8 games): FG% .578. 3pt% .400 (54 total) PPG 117.3 assists per game assists per game 29.875, rebounds per game 36

2012 team (through 7 games): FG% .528, 3pt% .445 (114 total) PPG 116.7 assists per game 26.7, rebounds per game 45.7

Now compare their opponents
1992: FG% .365, 3pt%.305, PPG 73.5
2012: FG% .449, 3pt% .327, PPG 81

Now I think MJ is the greatest of all time and I would give a slight edge to the 1992 Dream Team, but Kobe's words look pretty accurate so far. This team could definitely beat the 1992 Dream Team - people who think it would be a blowout must be joking.

What stands out in the statistical comparison is that
(A)this team is way better at shooting three-pointers -- they have been winning by burying their opponents with 3-pointers at critical moments (jacking all these shots does lower their FG% though)
(B)scoring, assists and rebounds are pretty close (actually surprised 2012 team has the rebounding edge), only area where 1992 team dominates is blocks per game unsurprisingly, and
(C)the statistics clearly reflect that the rest of the world got better - while debateable, it seems unlikely that better perimeter defense really explains that 3pt shooting discrepancy.

I would also add that one of the big reasons you often hear 2012 wouldn't stand a chance is because the 1992 players were so much more physical and the 2012 guys couldn't handle that. That sounds like a good argument, but it doesn't work unless you make the assumption that they're both playing on a playground or at best with the more loose '92 rules/referees. If you were to flip the argument and use '12 rules/referees, then all that "physical play" would result in half the '92 team fouling out by halftime.

That's one of the big reasons all the stats in the world will never give us a real answer. Different eras aren't just different players. The whole game is different.

You truly know NOTHING about BASKETBALL. Its SAD to hear you try to prove a false hypothesis. 1992 was better for many reasons. Barkley cannot be defended by anyone on 2012 team neither could Karl Malone or any 2012 big men. Magic Johnson couldnt be stopped by anyone ever, hes 6' '9" and Jordan is worlds better than KOBE. The best defensive guard is JORDAN so Kobe wont do what he can do to other, to Jordan. Bird, Mullin, would lose to Durant but 2012 only won the small forward position, unless Barkley starts there. 1992 had the better coach and defensive players. Pippen, Jordan, Ewing and Malone were the best defensive players at their positions in 1992. 2012 gets BLOWN out.

I support my claims with data. There is an interesting simulation out there too that uses more advanced analytics and finds the game is very close. Of course we'll never really know, but just claiming is different from showing or making a convincing case. I claimed and provided evidence that (A)the 2012 team is better at shooting 3 pointers, but conceded that the 1992 team had better interior defense (well duh, everyone knows that without Dwight Howard this team was lacking in HOF big men), and (B)the stats for their opponents went way up. Now I will concede that some of their opponents stats reflects defence, but it is hard to argue that that is the whole story. If you think the Dream Team would consistently beat 2012 Spain or Argentina by 40 points you are dreaming, those teams are way better than 1992 Croatia and there are plenty of statistics to back that up.

let me take a moment here to congratulate nbc for the fine job they've done with the olympic coverage. apart from the warm up games, i have yet to see the men's team play even a minute of live basketball. yes, nbc has a sports channel they wanedt to debut with all the action the men's team was in, but a lot of us don't have the nbc sports channel so a lot of us missed it. again, thanks a lot.
okay, we should be used to seeing nbc put coverage of the olympics on its cable channels (msnbc, cnbc, bravo) and then seeing to it that not everyone gets to see that coverage. it insists on charging cable providers a per-subscriber fee that not every cable provider is willing to pay. ours is one.
to compensate for those providers too cheap to pony up, nbc has dual programming, if your cable provider won't pay, you can watch Lockup or other equally enthralling programming.
it is my sincere hope that the next olympics will be carried by another network, because i am tired of the maudlin coverage nbc seems intent on providing.

The main issue I have with NBC is they do allow live online streaming, but only if you're paying for cable. That makes no sense. I'm perfectly happy to watch commercials or whatever, but why should I have to pay for an unrelated service in order to do so? The whole point to commercials is it's my method of "payment." I even get my Internet through the cable company, but that's not good enough.

I suspect the cable companies themselves are blocking it, through contracts or whatever (I have similar issues with blackout restrictions online and not being able to subscribe directly to HBO). One of the many reasons I can't wait for the cable mini-monopolies to get broken up.

Contrary to what a lot of people would like to think...no matter how good a team, even as obvioiusly powerful as the USA basketball team with Lebron, Kobe, Durant is not going to be beaten easily by anyone...BUT....there is always the upset...and a team bent on causing trouble, getting a good coach, right circumstance...CAN DO IT....on one out ten tries for example...so if the US played spain ten times...you think Spain would lose all ten times? Probably not...so there is that possibility that the one time they could win will show up on the day they meet for the gold....hopefully IT WONT! LOL...but they can always get lucky...so no one should ever think its a cinch....its not....is this post even necessary? Dont I have something better to do with my time? Apparently not.

I would love to see the team made up of a blend of pro's and college players. Having it stacked with all NBA players isnt in the spirit of the games in my opinion. I havnt watched a single game because the outcome is pre-determined, the track and field, gymnastics and even the swimming had elements of "Who will get it done", that doesnt happen here.
