Journalistically speaking, there is value in pointing out fault. And if there was a Pulitzer Prize awarded solely for that practice, NBC's Olympic commentators would be shoe-ins for it.
The video above puts the spotlight on the cringe-worthy reactions of different commenting squads and drowns them in their own bile. Employing a simple but brilliant editing trick, the video shows just how harsh these announcers can be by lining up fault after fault.
"I know I sound like I'm obnoxiously critical," commentator Tim Daggett says in the last seconds of this edit reel, but that's just the half of it. On the business end of each of these barbs, someone who's trained all their life for this moment and just had had their Olympic dream crushed. Don't they deserve a little more respect?
The gymnastics crew of Daggett, Al Trautwig, Elfi Schlegel and Andrea Joyce placed dead last in an SBNation survey of NBC Olympic commenting teams, which called out their tendency to exaggerate and "play up the schmaltz factor." On the other side of the coin, the network's track and field team was lauded for its coverage.
