Happy Birthday, Zen Center!
On Saturday, the San Francisco Zen Center--one of the largest Buddhist sanghas outside of Asia--celebrated 50 years in the the city. What started as a tiny one-man practice in 1962 has now grown into an empire, with three centers and an online portal, dozens of programs and hundreds of participants.
To celebrate the landmark, the center hosted an anniversary party at Greens restaurant on Saturday. On Monday, SFZC took the party to the streets with a lively procession and public conference, featuring speakers like actor Peter Coyote, author Rebecca Solnit, District Five Supervisor Christina Olague and voices from the Zen community.
