The mystery of Amelia Earhart's disappearance has eluded scholars and scientists for decades, but Discovery set out to solve the case in a special called "Finding Amelia Earhart: Mystery Solved?" (Sun., Aug. 19, 10 p.m. ET). HuffPost TV has a sneak peek at their investigation.
In the video above, Richard Gillespie, the executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, says he believes he can put the mystery to bed, but acknowledges the daunting challenge of finding concrete of evidence Earhart's plane.
"What we don't have is the single, magical smoking gun that removes all doubt," Gillespie says.
“This is when Discovery truly embodies its namesake," Eileen O'Neill, group president of Discovery Channel and TLC Networks, said in a statement. "We are excited and proud to be working with TIGHAR, paying tribute to an American icon and hero while developing new technologies to reach back into the past and solve one of the last great mysteries of the 20th century."
