Baby Somali Wild Ass Joins The Herd At Zoo Miami (PHOTOS)

LOOK: Wild Ass Baby!

The Zoo Miami family has welcomed a jaunty baby wild ass to the facility, the first one born at the zoo.

The Somali Wild Ass -- no, really, that's what they're called -- was born on Aug. 9 to 14-year-old mom Lisha, according to Zoo Miami's Facebook page. After a preliminary inspection, staff thinks that the foal is a baby girl.

So far, she has adapted well to being in the spotlight with the herd and her new surroundings, staff said. With her long legs, the healthy foal was photographed galloping for the public and also sticking close to mom and friends.

According to the San Diego Zoo, the Somali Wild Ass is critically endangered with only a few hundred left in the wild.

Zoo Miami has been busy so far this year with more than a few new additions. A female giraffe was born in March, followed by baby Titan in July. In May, two playful baby warthogs joined the zoo family.
