WASHINGTON -- White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has a response to the vice presidential advice Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) offered President Barack Obama: Thanks, but no thanks.
During a Fox News interview on Wednesday, McCain suggested that it "might be wise" for Obama to run with Hillary Clinton this time around, since Vice President Joseph Biden has a propensity for putting his foot in his mouth. McCain, of course, tapped Sarah Palin as his running mate in his failed bid for the White House in 2008.
During his Thursday briefing, Carney said McCain isn't one to talk about picking vice presidents.
"One place I would not go for advice on vice presidential running mates is Sen. McCain," Carney said to laughs and groans. He noted, though, that he has "great admiration for and respect for" the Republican senator.
In case there was any confusion, Carney also confirmed to Fox's Ed Henry that Obama is, in fact, running with Biden.
"Yes," he said. "That was settled a long, long time ago."
Both McCain and the other target of Carney's putdown, Sarah Palin, have suggested that Obama reconsider his running mate, after Biden drew fire this week for making what some saw as a racially charged comment at a rally on Tuesday.
Biden has since defended himself, and Obama has backed him up.
