A group of reasonably bright young kids with no serious experience in web development attempted to build an ambitious open-source federated social content platform using Ruby on Rails, promising users privacy, confidentiality, and complete control over their data.

Then they released an application riddled with the most gaping security holes which, for example, allowed anybody to change anybody's password. Diaspora wasn't open-sourced as an alpha-quality work-in-progress. It was open-sourced to a reaction of "wow, these guys are clueless".

Not surprising, considering one of the project's main creators died. It's sad to see something promising go, but then again, I don't think we need any more social networking sites.
