Homemade Ketchup Recipes: More Than Just Tomato (PHOTOS)

French fries wouldn't be as popular if it weren't for ketchup. We could probably say the same thing about burgers. These foods go hand-in-hand with that bright red bottled condiment. But if you've ever tried a homemade ketchup recipe, you'd have a hard time not putting it on everything; sneaking spoonfuls of it becomes a likely occurance too. It's just that much better than the store-bought bottle you've got stashed in your refrigerator door.

Even though Heinz came out with its balsamic flavored ketchup and MIT (the school) has come up with a way for it to slide out of the bottle easily, the homemade ketchup recipe is well worth the effort.

Have you all not discovered the BEST Ketchup in the whole wide world!?! CURRY KETCHUP made by Montebello Kitchens. Sophisticated, enriching, enticing, tongue tinglling ketchup.

You will never go back to any other. Little difficult to find, but worth the hunt.

There used to be this fancy Bordeaux ketchup. Ketchup's equivalent to Grey Poupon, I guess. Once I tried it, I could never go back to regular ketchup. But then I couldn't find it anymore. So I stopped using ketchup and switched to mustard, which I love anyway. But then I discovered HP Sauce (not to mention Branston Pickle), so everything is right in the world again.

I started making my own ketchup when all of the commercial brands had HFCS in them. Now they have some with only sugar and organic brands so I don't have to. But I am determined to develop the perfect recipe to my taste. Still working on it since I don't use ketchup that often so only have to make it once a year.

We made homemade ketchup over the summer with homegrown tomatoes and it was the bomb. And it's actually not that hard.

Some years ago the Boston Globe did a gourmet ketchup tasting. They had all sorts of expensive gourmet brands of fancy and traditional ketchups, including peach ketchup, mushroom ketchup, etc. And the winner was, to everyone's surprise, Heinz ketchup.

So give it up. Call it something else. When you say "ketchup", Heinz is what they expect.

My mother made her own tomato ketchup. She may as well not have bothered. It was more expensive to make and nowhere near as good as Heinz.

Yup. As someone who has enjoyed making "ketchup," nothing is as good as Heinz. It IS the taste people EXPECT when they think of ketchup. Faved.
