Rabbi Shmuley Boteach At The Huffington Post's Oasis: On Sleep, Recharging And Beauty

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach Shares His Beauty Tips And More At HuffPost's Oasis

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, author, TV host and all around funny guy caught up with us at The Huffington Post's Oasis to share his somewhat unconventional ways of finding balance. He touches on whiskey, unisex beards and honoring the Sabbath. Read below to find out more of of Shmuley's tips.

How do you unplug and recharge?
I observe the Sabbath where I purge myself of all electronic noise. I play with my kids. I swim in a giant vat of single malt whiskey hoping that some of the splashes will enter my body. Definitely single malt whiskey. It’s not true the dog’s a man’s best friend, whiskey is a man’s best friend.

How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
About 5 hours a night, I’d like to sleep more. I am really bored when I sleep. I don’t have a lot to do when I sleep –- I am passive and idle and I don’t like it. I don’t like when it makes me cranky, but something tells me I am cranky even when I do sleep.

What's your top beauty tip (can be for inner or outer beauty!)?
Men and women should have a beard -– it lends phenomenal beauty. It’s a sign of our inner wildness made manifest. That women can’t grow a beard is a sign of their own emasculation, which is too bad. I am not a fitness guru but I think we all need to be fit enough to do the things we want to in life -- live long and prosper, ride a bike with our kids. Natural is beautiful, I am not into the artificial as beautiful. Confidence is the greatest form of beauty.

What's your quick health fix to restore your energy?
Even though it’s not relaxing, I enjoy writing. Writing nurtures my soul. It’s never easy, but it’s rejuvenating. Putting your ideas on paper is a great form of intellectual release.

What foods keep you balanced?
Potato chips, popcorn and other low-cholesterol treats. I also like olives and hearts of palms!
