Months after all the ground beef at a supermarket in Antioch, Calif. was removed from shelves when it was discovered to be contaminated with pieces of "chewed-up pen," a Wisconsin establishment is recalling 2,920 pounds of frozen meat because they may also contain pieces of a plastic pen.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today that the recall concerns Klement's Sausage Company Inc.'s 10-lb. cases of 4-ounce bratwurst patties, which were produced on July 6, 2012.
The packages are marked with the establishment number “EST. 2426B” in the USDA mark of inspection and the batch number “21097” on the case label. They were distributed in Iowa, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
FSIS explains more in a press release:
FSIS was alerted to the problem by the firm after the company received complaints from distributors who were made aware by food preparation personnel who discovered the foreign matter while preparing to cook the product. FSIS and the company have received no reports of injury or illnesses associated with consumption of this product. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Klement's Sausage Company's website doesn't mention the recall -- the most recent press releases on the site is from 2010 -- but it does reveal that the company was founded in 1956 and its products are featured in major league ballparks. The company also sponsors several professional sports teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers and the Minnesota Twins.
