DETROIT, MI - A development team including former Michigan State University and Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson is gaining traction with a major redevelopment proposal for the 162-acre former state fairgrounds property at Woodward Avenue and 8 Mile Road.

Johnson is joined by Joel Ferguson and Marvin Beatty, former Detroit Deputy Fire Commissioner, as the partners in the project, which would include 500,000 square feet of retail and housing, according to a proposal submitted to the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority and obtained by MLive today.
