Hurricane Isaac Dog Rescues: 4 Saved From Flood Waters In Louisiana

Posted: Updated:

From Vetstreet's Shayna Meliker:

Rescuers saved a 70-year-old man and his four dogs from rising flood waters in Louisiana caused by Hurricane Isaac. The man, who lost his home to Hurricane Katrina seven years ago, was trapped in his attic with the canines after a levee breach in Plaquemines Parish.

The WWL-TV reporter notes that this time around, rescuers made a concerted effort to save pets from the storm — a drastic difference from the aftermath of Katrina.

According to Time magazine, the Louisiana SPCA estimates that 70,000 pets remained in New Orleans during Katrina, and only 15,000 were saved. Even the rescued animals faced an uncertain fate then, as just 20 percent of those pets were reunited with their owners. State and federal lawmakers have since revised evacuation policies to include disaster plans for pets.

You can watch the man and his dogs being rescued beginning at the 1:15 mark of the video.
