Pay attention to "Rust and Bone" this awards season, as it stands a chance to make some history for Marion Cotillard. The French star could become just the fifth actress to earn multiple Oscar nominations for a foreign-language role.
Directed by Jacques Audiard ("A Prophet") and based on a collection of short stories by author Craig Davidson, "Rust and Bone" premiered to rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The film made its North American debut at the Telluride Film Festival last weekend and will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival as well. Cotillard stars as Stephanie, an orca trainer at a marine-life zoological park who tragically loses her legs when one of the whales attacks. After the incident, she forms a relationship with a bare-knuckle boxer and bouncer named Ali ("Bullhead" star Matthias Schoenaerts) and attempts to piece her life back together. In addition to the performances from Cotillard and Schoenaerts, "Rust and Bone" is notable for its inventive and somber use of Katy Perry's smash Top-40 hit "Firework."
Cotillard was previously nominated for and won Best Actress after playing Edith Piaf in "La vie en Rose," a role that was entirely done in French.
