Most celebrities have been silent about Vanity Fair's controversial cover story regarding the auditioning of potential wives for Tom Cruise. But now Kathie Lee Gifford is coming forward to defend the star, saying none of it makes any sense to her.

"Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Can't he get a date, you know, on his own without everyone auditioning?" Gifford asked. "It just makes no sense to me. It just sounds so medieval. I just can't imagine that he would allow himself to be manipulated like that."

And while Tom's lawyer, Bert Fields, called the expose "long, boring and false," the story's author, Maureen Orth, appeared on ABC to defend it.

"It's just too bizarre for words. I hope all of it is untrue," said Gifford. "I don't like to read stuff like that. I have met Tom Cruise; he's an absolute delight of a guy to be around. Frank [Gifford, Kathie Lee's husband] worked with him on 'Jerry Maguire.' He wasn't in any scenes with him, but he said Tom came to the set when others were shooting just to support them. He's the kind of guy that knows everyone's name on the set and gives gifts. He's a nice man, so I don't want to believe it."

Gifford can be seen with Hoda Kotb Monday through Friday hosting the fourth hour of the "Today" show.
