Chicago School Bus Shooting: Bus With Children Aboard Struck By Bullet, No Injuries Reported

Bus Struck By Gunfire With Students Aboard, No Injuries Reported

No injuries were reported Friday morning when school bus packed with elementary school students was struck by gunfire as it was stopped to pick up two children on Chicago's Far South Side.

The bus was transporting approximately 25 students to Our Lady of Guadalupe School, a parochial school, around 7:45 a.m. when a bullet flew through a side window in the 10600 block of South Calhoun Avenue, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Police say the bullet appeared to have proceeded through an empty bus seat before shattering a second window. The bus was about two miles away from the school at the time of the shooting.

Lucy Reyes, the grandmother of two boys who'd been waiting for the bus, told the Chicago Sun-Times that gunfire in the area is not unusual.

"Over here they shoot all the time," Reyes told the newspaper. "That’s not new."

"Gratefully none of the students were harmed, and this incident demonstrates why the school's mission is so critical to its families," Ryan Blackburn of the Archdiocese Office of Catholic Schools told ABC Chicago of the incident.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

It has been a violent year in Chicago, as both homicides and shootings are up markedly over last year.
