In eerie animal news this week, tens of thousands of dead fish and seagulls washed up on the Ontario shores of Lake Erie. Although the cause of the incident remains unknown, an Ontario Ministry of the Environment spokeswoman said it may have been a "rolling over of the lake," reported the Chatham Daily News, which occurs when colder water with lower oxygen levels reaches the surface.
In the Czech Republic, a keeper at the zoo in Dvur Kralove was attacked by a pygmy hippopotamus. The Associated Press reported that a hospital spokesman "said the woman had lost a lot of blood due to right-leg injuries and doctors were battling to save her leg."
Although they appeared to be in danger, this family of ducks successfully crossed a busy Canadian freeway in one of the most hair-raising animal videos in recent memory.
Earlier this week, a black bear was on the run after eluding police, firefighters and animal control officers in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. The bear, which had been in a tree, had been sprayed with water by officials trying to coax him down.
