Most Expensive States For Raising Children: CNBC

CNBC:

According to the most recent annual report from the USDA, it now costs $234,900 to provide a child with 17 years of food, shelter, and other necessities. For 2011, that broke down to an annual cost for two-parent, middle-income families of $12,290 to $14,320 -depending on the child's age.

Knew without even clicking on the slideshow that NYC would be the most expensive. Just surprised that MA would rank so low. My friends and rels are always complaining there how high childcare is in MA.

So I ran the calculator. For 1 child under the age of 1 in the Urban/Suburban West it said it would cost me $25k/year since annual income is over $100k. For under $58k it was $12k/year.

Whats up with that?

They have so many kids in Utah that to save money they have indoor kids and outdoor kids. The outdoor kids just have to fend for themselves.

Sounds like we need to get the government involved in this travesty and require all business, big and small, to provide free day care. Government at least would make sure that all care givers are unionized, certified and sanitized.
Government would make sure that all day care is free and that no one has to pay for it.

That's what we do with one parent earning and the other staying home to take care of the son. Hell, it's hard, with the only consolation being that atleast we have a well mannered and a well adjusted child.
