On Tuesday, communities around the world marked the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people.

In the United States, friends and relatives of the victims of the attacks gathered during a ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center site in New York. Barack and Michelle Obama marked the anniversary with the White House staff on the South Lawn.

On the other side of the world, U.S. ambassador to Israel Daniel B. Shapiro, who was working in the Pentagon on the day of the attacks, led a ceremony at a memorial to the victims in Jerusalem, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports.

According to the Telegraph, an American flag inscribed with the names of the victims of the attacks was raised at an American base in Afghanistan and a service was held at the American embassy in the country.
