This year's Colorado Remembers ceremony will not only pay tribute to the lives lost during the September 11 terrorist attacks, it will also honor the Colorado emergency crews who responded to wildfires this summer as well as the July 20 Aurora theater shooting.
Gov. John Hickenlooper, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan will host the free event at Civic Center Park's Great Lawn from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today presented by the Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab (CELL). The event will feature speeches from all three Colorado officials as well as the Denver Broncos' John Elway and live musical performances by Hazel Miller and the Colorado Children's Chorale.
The 9/11 tribute portion of the event will feature artifacts from the World Trade Center, FDNY's Rescue 4 fire truck, a remembrance ceremony with the Colorado National Guard and Taps.
The Colorado emergency crew portion of the event titled "Rising Together" will feature a tribute to first responders and other heroes in the wake of this summer's wildfires and the Aurora theater shooting. A special tribute will be made by Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates and Aurora Fire Chief Mike Garcia.
Although attendees can bring their own food, Civic Center Eats will also be on hand with the best Denver's gourmet food truck scene has to offer.
2011's Colorado Remembers ceremony drew nearly 35,000 people to Civic Center Park and featured a performance by the Beach Boys and display of World Trade Center steel.
