New York Fashion Week's Most Over-The-Top Beauty: Smurf Hair, Face Paint And More (PHOTOS)

This Was A Thing At New York Fashion Week

Among what seemed like a relatively restrained fashion week -- lots of center parts, barely-there makeup, pretty standard fare -- there were a handful of shows that really delivered on the "What the…?" aspect that backstage beauty is often known for.

There was an interesting use of electrical tape over at Alexander Wang, while the models at Band Of Outsiders looked like a pack of scrawny, third-string football players with white paint applied underneath their eyes.

But if there's one thing we've learned, primary colors were big this season. Something bearing resemblance to Big Bird surfaced at Libertine, while blue eyeshadow made multiple appearances at shows like Joy Cioci, Michael Kors and Anna Sui. But the latter really upped the ante when she sent her models down the runway wearing "Smurf" blue hair pieces woven into their normal hair, creating a bizarro two-toned effect. But who knows, maybe six months from now we'll all be wearing our hair like that.

Though, we have to give it up to the good folks over at Adrian Alicea for whipping up a look we could only describe as a Christmas nightmare. With green spray-painted hair and a creative use of red eyeshadow, we're all seriously wondering what is happening there? Either way, that look took the cake.

As New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 came to a close yesterday, we decided to gather up all the truly zany beauty looks. We're also looking ahead to London, Milan and Paris for continued outrageous-ness. Stay tuned.
