Stephen Colbert Tells Fordham Students: 'I Love My Church'

Stephen Colbert

RACHEL ZOLL   09/14/12 11:59 PM ET EDT  AP

NEW YORK — In a rare public moment out of character, actor Stephen Colbert told students at the Jesuit Fordham University on Friday that he loves the Roman Catholic Church no matter its human flaws.

The host of "The Colbert Report" talked about his faith in a discussion on humor and spirituality with New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the Rev. James Martin, author of "Between Heaven and Mirth" and the official chaplain of Colbert's show.

Colbert, who has taught Sunday school classes to school-age children, said people in comedy often don't understand how he could remain Catholic. But he said he views the church as teaching joy, which he called the "infallible sign of the presence of God."

"I love my church – warts and all," he said, before an audience of about 3,000 cheering students, who posted his quotes on Twitter using the organizers' (hash)dolancolbert hashtag.

Colbert said people in comedy often make jokes at the expense of religion, but he makes jokes about what he called people's misuse of religion in politics and other arenas. Still, he said, "If Jesus doesn't have a sense of humor, I am in huge trouble."

Colbert took the opportunity to needle Dolan about the new English-language translation of the Roman Missal, the text of prayers and instructions for celebrating Mass. The translation was introduced last fall in U.S. parishes to initial grumbling over what critics called stilted language. A focus of the complaints was the translation of the Nicene Creed, replacing the phrase "one in Being with the Father" to "consubstantial with the Father."

"Consubstantial?" Colbert said, as Dolan shook his head and laughed. "It's the Creed. It's not the SAT prep."

For his part, Dolan, who gave benedictions at both the Republican and Democratic national conventions, told of his encounter with Clint Eastwood at the GOP event.

According to the cardinal, Eastwood said he had once played a preacher in a movie and said "I know that neck thing is really uncomfortable."

The cardinal didn't mention Eastwood's peculiar talk on the convention stage with an imaginary President Barack Obama in an empty chair.

As an atheist, I am deeply offended that Colbert actually respects his religion. I thought he was smrt.

Me too Stephen. I'm also a Catholic. No need to religion hop. Jesus didn't. We take a lot of shots for the tragic things our church does. For some reason, and for the life of me I cannot understand it, but I cannot get a post approved and written that simply confirms Mormons believe Jesus is really Adam. I studied with them for over a year. I know this is a FACT. What's the big deal? Own it. I'll be interested to see if this post passes inspection. Here goes.

Lord knows Jesus didn't believe in the hokus-pokus of religion. Rather he spoke out against it.
Matthew 23:15. Religion hopping will get you nowhere and fast, so he says. Religion is not God. No one owns God. No one owns Christianity. No one owns the sacrifice Jesus made for ALL mankind. But oh how they do try. Bottle it up, hoard it, and then sell it out for a price, as IF it were a commodity. No wonder the athiest community is growing!

I know Jews who are loyal to Friday night ritual even though they don't believe a word of it and Catholics who wouldn't want to break their mother's heart. Some people have nothing but good memories of childhood religion. From what I know of Colbert, I suspect his family was really supported by their local church when his father and brothers died. But the religious person i admire most was Woodie Gutherie, who was so far out ahead of his time, that whenever he was asked his religion,he always said, "All of them".
05:08 PM on 09/19/2012
Yeah, I really like Steven Colbert but I have trouble with the idea of supporting a group that thought more about it's own image than the fate of thousands of sexually abused children over *decades*. This isn't an annoying wart, it's a thing so evil we have not thought of a proper word for it yet. What that church did to it's own congregation, to it's most vulnerable members of its flock is so inexcusable it's beyond my comprehension, and every member of its religion must either ignore, just like those Bishops and Popes, the cries of those abused children and excuse the horrible act done to them or run fleeing from that kind of madness. It does pain me to see which way Colbert has chosen to side with.

The church is a much larger thing than just a few bishops or the Pope, and it is possible for us to love the church while hating what a small portion of the members (and yes, some leaders) do.

In my own family I was molested by an uncle..... but I don't hate my mother, grandparents, other uncles, because of what one uncle did.

As Catholics we worship One God and one Savior, Jesus Christ. We consider ourselves one body in Christ, but also realize that we are individual members whose actions stand alone. Though we are all one church, the existence of child molesters and those who cover up for them in the church don't make me, my wife, my children, the many priests who have served me through the years, child molesters. I know that you may look at a priest who molests a child and look at me,a Catholic who has never him, and decide in your own mind that it makes me a child molester or supporter of child molesters too. But that has more to say about you and your view of religion than it does about us and our faith.

You, and I as well as Catholics who believe in the Trinity worship ONE God. If you believed Jesus was really Adam and worshipped him, how many God's would you be worshipping? Two. The Mormon faith, and I studied w/ them for over a year, do in fact believe that Jesus is really and in fact Adam. If you do not believe me, further investigate.

This is not a social club. It is not about any image or action. Rather, it is about God, honoring, worshiping and serving God. That is what he does as a Catholic, that is what people do as assorted forms of Christians.

There is no human foible or failing that allows us to be excused from the imperative to come together in service, worship and fellowship in the name of the Lord.

In the name of the Lord, yes!! But not in the name of Adam. I mean no disrespect, but the truth is the Mormon religion teaches that Jesus is really Adam. That is a fact. I studied w/ them for over a year. We cannot worship both God and Adam. Or at least I can't. I believe in the Trinity.

Colbert is an enabler. He's giving cover to abusive men and probably financially supporting them as well. I understand having a religious identity but remaining a member of an organization whose doctrines demand that women subject themselves to abstinence or endless pregnancies is wrong, Swearing allegiance to a church whose leaders tell women religious that their job is to shut up and do as they're told and who tell the world that the reputation of the Roman Catholic Church is more important than the lives and souls of the tens of thousands of children who have been raped by their priests is enabling that evil.

Yes, the Catholic Church has done a lot of good. Mussolini made the trains run on time, too.

The people who are abuse women and children can be categorized in many ways. Religious (of all denominations and religious faiths), men, women, children, Americans (and other nationalities), in short humans of all types. So should we renounce our own faith, our own sex, our own nationality, or our own species, because a subset of that group mistreats women and or children? There is no group that you can consider oneself a member of that doesn't contain abusers. But I suspect that your issue is with Catholicism in general, and that sexual abuse only gives you a reasonable pretext for prejudice.

What you are doing here is quite fowl. You are disrespecting this man's faith, and his decision to embrace and support his faith and denomination. That is not your business. That is not your concern.

It is just rude.

I agree with you to a certain point. Insulting another persons religious faith is rude. Sharing acurate knowledge about their faith is power. Especially when it is acurate knowledge they do not want to be revealed. Which I mentioned before. Jesus is really Adam? If so, everytime we show worship to Jesus, they call us false Christians, worshipping 2 God's. I studied w/ them for over a year, I know this! They do NOT see us as real Christians. That's a fact. They won't admit that in public, but they sure did at my kitchen table for over a year!
10:25 AM on 09/19/2012
Unless you start your own church (CULT) you will never agree with everything about an existing organization. We are all unique individuals. I admire his dedication to his church with the realization that it is not perfect. And please - God MUST have a sence of humour. Look around. And this is an example of just taking things way too seriously, You guys need to lighten up.

Picture this; you're just a kid at the lake with your dad and brother. You go into the lake and need serious help. You yell to your dad and brother standing on the bank to come and help you. Your dad is a gold medal olympiam swimmer. Your brother is afraid of water. All of a sudden your dad pushes your brother into the lake and tells him to get out there and save you. How would you feel about that?

I know I would be ticked, if I even lived so long to be ticked.

That IS the Mormon belief. God pushed Adam in to save us? Adam IS Jesus.

No thanks. I would rather have my dad jump in to save me. Thank you very much.

Like Stephen, I grew up Catholic in South Carolina, where we were a relatively sane minority in a sea of regressive fundamentalism. I know his "confession" will alienate some people, but I respect him immensely, and I know many thoughtful, progressive Catholics.

For all my disagreements with that church, I AM thankful for the many gifts my Catholic upbringing gave me: a sense of communion with people of other races and nations around the world; compassion for the poor; appreciation of music and the arts of painting, sculpture, stained glass, and architecture; respect for education; an understanding that the heart of the Gospel is love, not faith; and an understanding of myself as being part of a long historical tradition.

Amen!
05:11 PM on 09/19/2012
And every dollar you as a "thoughtful progressive" give to your church goes to support the system which held down raped children and their families with gag orders and threats of excommunication. Every one of your faithful, "progressive" donations goes to support the Pope who knew of it happening and did nothing! I don't know that you can be progressive if all your dollars go to fund the regressive and barbaric system that supports child molesters.

I was just talking about the GOOD part of that church's influence in my life, which was considerable.

Just because SOME priests abused children or teenagers, and SOME of the hierarchy colluded to cover it up, that doesn't negate the good aspects of Catholic humanism, or all the good works and loving hearts of many Catholics in the vast stretch of a 2,000 year tradition.

As for the funding, I left in 2003, and I don't know which progressive Catholics give what to whom. I would imagine they target pretty well.

Mark 2:27 & 28: [27] Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. [28] So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

I think this is an important scripture because you made a point on something that I have always said...

You choose to believe or not to believe. God didn't make it where we are slaves. He has sat forth laws for us to live by not just in the flesh, but also in the spirit so that we can choose to come back to God or not.

All religion is organized. There is none that is not.
