Channing Tatum knows the first time can be a bit disappointing, which is why he told Vulture that he won't direct any sequel to "Magic Mike" until he directs something else beforehand.
"Reid [Carolin] and I aren't idiots! We're not going to direct our first movie as a sequel to a Steven Soderbergh movie," Tatum told Vulture when asked about "Magic Mike 2" during an event for "10 Years," Tatum's latest venture with Carolin, who wrote "Magic Mike." "That's not smart. I want to start with something very small ... make a lot of mistakes, make them real early, and then go jump in [on 'Magic Mike 2']."
Last week, Tatum told a German news site that he would consider directing "Magic Mike 2," but that nothing was set in stone. That mostly jibes with what Tatum's wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, told Movieline during a recent interview.
"I think he definitely wants to direct in the future, and he definitely knows that world and how to capture that," Dewan-Tatum said. "But nothing is solidified, and I think he was just throwing it out there. But he’ll be a fantastic director when he decides to do that."
Released in June, "Magic Mike" made $154 million worldwide. Before it was even released, there was talk of doing a "Magic Mike" prequel because of how the film ends. (Spoiler alert: Tatum's character retires.)
“We’re actually talking about the possibility of doing the prequel," co-star Joe Manganiello told Hollywood.com in June. "Because if you do the sequel, then you lose Mike [Channing Tatum’s character]. Otherwise, what’s Mike going to do? He’s going to come back for one big heist ... so, you would do the prequel -- how they got there.”
