#MuslimRage Twitter Response To Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Newsweek Piece Shows What Makes Muslims Mad

Newsweek has caused controversy again with a piece by anti-Islam polemicist Ayaan Hirsi Ali with a frontpage headline blaring Muslim Rage.

Newsweek went on Twitter to encourage conversation using #MuslimRage.

always a convinent, readymade excuse muslims are ready with is that the action of few misguided muslims be not regarded as the actions condoned by islam.

but why is it that most muslims misunderstand islam(i sure know, it's these moderates who misunderstand, the extremists know full well what they are doing, is just fine, and divinely sanctioned), it is because the modern times have forced them to abandon the violent jihad, so they intend to be peaceful. atleast to the times they are not in sizeable number to push ahead their demands.

Please allow me to say that the problems presented here are not the problems of Islam per se. They are problems of a lack of commitment, lack of application, or misapplication of Islamic teachings by Muslims themselves. Thus, I stand here in defense of Islam,and not Muslims, for Islam is a peaceful religion that has been misinterpereted, altered, and exploited by "individuals" who by no means represent me and my Muslim friends.

If they were gainfully employed, would they have time to rant and rave? Why are these men not working? Do they have education and skills that would make them employable? Would their prophet approve of their murderous ways? Did their prophet tell them to go about killing people without rhyme or reason? How does killing other people make you a better person? I do not suppose they can turn the other cheek.

#1. ice cream #2 oppressing women 3. Watching dogs being hit by cars. 4. watching children not playing or learning anything other than the quran. 5. explosions especially if someone dies 6. running towards a western embassy carrying a propane tank with nails stuck to the sides of it while yelling jihad jihad. 7. american flag burning 8. being completely irrational about absalutely everything. 9. moving to a westen country than complaining about the ways of the west. 10. retelling the story about the 72 virgins in jihad heaven

Just to note, a Muslim will punch you in the face for cursing Jesus, Moses, Abraham or any of the prophets in Quran, their holy book; the religion sees them as sacred images and true prophets as well. In fact the Quran mentions them more than prophet Muhammad, as it does Virgin Mary.

I just want to clarify that Islam does not condemn Christianity by any means. In fact, one of the most well-known "hadeeth" in Islam described the earliest interfaith dialogue between Christians and Muslims that occurred near the beginning of Muhammad's prophethood:

The Prophet and his companions were greatly oppressed by the polytheists of Makkah. Muhammad sent some of his followers to seek refuge with the Negus of Abyssinia - a righteous and just Christian king. He listened to the Prophet's emissary with great respect and awe, especially the Qur'anic description of Mary and Jesus.Hearing this, Negus said:'This hath truly come from the same source as that which Jesus brought.' (source: Lings, Muhammad, His Life Based on the Earliest Sources p. 83) . This description led the king and his subjects to affirm that this indeed was God's revelation and gladly grant the Muslims asylum they sought.
When Negus died, the Prophet said, "Today a pious man has died. So get up and offer the funeral prayer for your brother Ashama." (Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 58, Number 217).
The Prophet recognized Christians as one of the "People of the Book." He treated them with respect and kindness, contracted treaties with the various Christian tribes,& assured them the freedom to practice their faith and determine their own affairs while living under Islamic law.

It'll be great if we all choose to live in harmony while respecting each others' beliefs & choice of living.

Very well said and done. Muslims need to speak up and silence these fanatics who have hijacked our religion. This fight must be fought by us Muslims from within and cleanse our communities of divisive clerics and extremists by ourselves. It's a shame when I see young American soldiers sacrificing their lives for our freedoms. The reality is we Muslims should be at the front lines of this war flushing out the radicals from our midst.

i greatly respect your message of peace. but i would love the moment it comes with a lot of substance, rather than empty rhetoric.

firstly, the polytheists were not as bad as you are making them out to be.

muhammad recieved his revelation in 610 AD. and, since then started taunting pagans about there polytheism. he openly started condemning their god, but could still live for 12 full years in mecca, before hijra.

that said, pagans tolerated his ramblings about their god for over a decade.
but, if today i come in lebanon, and openly condemn mohammad as paedophile, for how long would i be alive? though i would be speaking only a truth.
well, i don't think even for a minute your muslim brothers would let me live. rather they would be competing among themselves to kill me, so that the door to heaven opens for themselves.

The Prophet never fought the non Muslims who were not fighting him. Narrated Ibn Abbas:
“The pagans were of two kinds as regards their relationship to the Prophet and the Believers. Some of them were those at war with the Prophet and he used to fight against them, as they used to fight him; the others were those with whom the Prophet made a treaty, and neither did the Prophet fight them, nor did they fight him.”(Bukhari 7. 210)
During the expansion of Islam in Arabia, the Prophet granted the Jews and Christians living in the settlements of Adruh, Maqna, Khaybar, Najran, & Aqaba protection of their lives, properties, as well as the freedom of belief and worship as long as they do not fight him. In one of his letters of peace treaty, the prophet wrote Harris Ibn Ka`b and other Christian leaders which said:
“The religion, churches, lives, chastity, and goods of all Christians living in the East are under the protection of God and all Muslims.No Christian will be forced to turn to Islam.If any Christian is subjected to any killing or injustice,Muslims must help him“.
The Prophet granted the Jewish tribe of Madina the permission to live as a separate religious community. In a document of treaty he signed with the Jewish tribe of Banu Awf and Banu khazraj, he said: “the Jews of Banu Awf are a community along with the believers. To the Jews their religion, and to the Muslims their religion”

Muslims view Muhammad as their role model,and they try to imitate him in their everyday lives.Thus,the Prophet's marriages were "symbolic" and represented the various marital choices permissible to Muslims.The Prophet married his 1st wife who was a widow in her 40s, when he was in his early 20s to confirm monogamy marriage and show that widows have the right to remarry.He married an 80 year old woman to convey the message that women can marry even at such an age. He married a black woman and a Christian to eliminate discriminations and prove that all people are equal.He married a slave to indicate that they are not inferior.And he married Aisha who was 9 to signify the maturity age for girls,and that's the age at which girls in Islam start to pray,fast,& wear veils.Thus, his marriages served to illustrate various Islamic concepts.
Prophet Muhammad,like all prophets, is infallible, thus when God conveyed His message in Quran, he LIMITED polygamy which was very popular then, to only four(if and only if equality& justice can be maintained.
Early marriage is frowned upon today because the culture has changed,but that doesn't necessarily make us right, for what we perceive as right today might sound totally awkward to future generations(and vice versa).Thus, what is"acceptable" is not a constant,but is rather shaped by our very surrounding.For example, homosexuality,once seen as a totally unacceptable sin,is normal in today's generation. It's a matter of change in attitude...

If I may say, most of the comments were harsh. I'm a Lebanese and a muslim, and many of my friends are Christians, including my American colleagues at AUB university, and we live in perfect peace and harmony... it's unfortunate that the Western media only exacerbate and feed the stereotype about Muslims. As with any other religion, we have few extremists who are thirsty for "media fame" and it's unfair to attribute the act of those few extremists to the entire muslim population.

"Death against innocent random people"? HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THE INQUISITION??? The Crusades? Christians have killed MORE than their fair share of innocent random people - and MANY were tortured and killed in the most heinously sexually depraved ways during the inquisition. Many were killed in the public square to frighten others. Many were accused just with the simple pointing of a finger.

And let's not forget Herr Hitler. He was Christian - and consulted the Bible in his death dealings. How many did he single-handedly kill?

If you do not like it then stand up and stop your Muslims brothers and sisters who in their mind are progressing Islam forward via violence...it is the responsibility of Islam to end this madness. When are you going to stand up to stop it instead of complaining that Americans stereotype you. We are not the problem. If one demeans someone's belief system you can count of them reacting to ones acts and insults with less than a positive response. Man has been going to war over the differences in their gods throughout history. The smart people are sensitive enough not to insult anyone's god, gods, or belief system and has the understanding to allow everyone space for their belief system. It is not that difficult to treat each other with respect, dignity, compassion. doc

Greetings rdk70816, I am the wrong person to ask what a religion should teach. In my opinion, what people should be taught is simple. There many different people in this world and all are special and all are unique. All should be respected and tolerated. We should all look out for each other as we look out for ourselves. (My generalities are over simplified) That peace is more productive than any war or violence and that denying a freedom to anyone is denying that freedom to yourself. I am not a religious person but this is what I think is important to teach children as they grow and re-enforce in our society and culture. doc
