Behold, the 1 percenters of the nonprofit world.
20 nonprofit CEOS earned a salary greater than $1 million in 2010 and 2011, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported.
This compares to 15 CEOs in the publication's last report of nonprofit executive pay.
Still, nonprofit CEO earnings grew at a median increase of just 2.7 percent in 2010, and these CEOs aren't lapping for-profit head honchos any time soon. The Chronicle points out that execs of companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 took home a median pay of $9.6 million in 2011.
Topping the Chronicles' list was Herbert Pardes, the CEO of New York-Presbyterian Hospital who retired in 2011. He earned $4,304,346 during 2010.
And when it comes to fundraising, transparency and overhead are huge issues for donors -- and these numbers affect donation decisions, Bloomberg reports:
“By far, the most comments we get have to do with CEO salaries and a general outrage and shock at some of the salaries that they see,” said Ken Berger, president of the nonprofit watchdog group Charity Navigator. “There are even donors shocked at the notion of a six-figure salary.”
But this outrage may be misguided and ultimately tarnish nonprofits' good reputations and hinder fundraising, Dan Pallotta, who writes about nonprofits, told Bloomberg:
“We have this total double standard that extends beyond compensation issue where we blame capitalism for creating these huge inequities in our society and then refuse to allow the nonprofit sector to use the tools of capitalism to rectify the situation."
Experts say nonprofit executive pay isn't expected to move much in coming years, with government funding cuts directly affecting salaries.
