We spend lots of time focusing on what stars wear (and any wardrobe malfunctions they may have), but what about what they put on their faces? Although makeup may not seem important, different kinds of makeup styles have now come to mean different things, socially and politically and plenty of women won't leave home without it.
In a survey, two-thirds of British women said that heading to the office bare-faced caused them more stress than public speaking, going on a first date or enduring a job interview. 91 percent of women surveyed would rather cancel a first date altogether than go without makeup on. And in the U.S., women spend around $7 billion on cosmetics every year.
And that doesn't even include hair. The AP recently reported that in 1950, about seven percent of women dyed their hair. Today? 95 percent or more.
With all that beauty-obsession (and our own love of makeup) in mind, we're taking a look at This Week In Beauty. From this week forward, we'll be showcasing the best, worst and most interesting styles of hair, makeup and nails that we came across this week. Take a look, get inspired and vote for your faves!
Anne Hathaway looked ravishing in Valentino (apparently her designer of choice) at the 2012 New York City Ballet Fall Gala on September 20th. We're still really digging Anne Hathaway's new pixie cut for "Les Miserables". So when she pairs it with her nude lipstick and glowing cheeks, the look is fresh and absolutely dreamy.
Oh Cyndi, we love that you stand up for what you believe in and celebrate your age. That's why when we saw you on Good Morning America it made us sad. Our advice: less is more. Show your true colors and ditch the heavy makeup.
Mad Men actress, Jessica Pare, beamed at the 64th Emmy Awards Writer Nominees Reception, baring her oft-talked about teeth. She paired her blinged-out shift dress with barely there makeup and just a touch of eyeliner. We're sure Donald Draper would approve.
Daphne Guinness attended the 2012 New York City Ballet Fall Gala September 20th in a somber black ensemble and a necklace that was... well, very Daphne Guinness. Instead of amping up her makeup to match the statement jewelry, the heiress went for a washed out look with harsh eyeliner. Next time, we'd like to see her looking fresh-faced and showing off her alabaster skin with a less matte foundation.
"Bad Boys II" actress, Gabrielle Union, attended the Urbanworld Film Festival: 'Being Mary Jane' at AMC Loews 34th Street 14 theater on September 20, shining from head to toe (Dwyane Wade agrees). With a glorious red shade of lipstick and a subtle smoky eye, Gabrielle really it brought it that night.
Kelly Osbourne has certainly had some interesting looks in her day -- the "Fashion Police" commentator doesn't seem to go a week without changing her hair. So it wasn't a surprise when she attended the premiere of "Crazy Horse" on September 19th in London with her usual zany lavender locks and matching pout, but the makeup queen seemed to have applied too much foundation. We applaude your courageousness Kelly, but maybe give minimalism a try sometime.
We don't need to tell you that Iman is a stone-cold fox. In her long career, she's married David Bowie, broken racial barriers in the modeling industry and manages to pull off leather at any age -- she really can't be any cooler. Her look at the 2012 New York City Ballet Fall Gala just made us swoon even more. With her delicate side-swept bangs, smokey eyes and gorgeous hair accessory, she looked simply radiant.
Bai Ling, the actress, who has made a career of being on the worst-dressed list and dating equally badly-dressed men attended the Lloyd Klein Spring 2013 Collection with a flop of a look. Too much orange bronzer and out of control fake lashes made her look a bit insane. But maybe that was what she was going for?
We were really pleased when we saw two-time "Dancing With The Stars" winner Julianne Hough at the Elle & Sundance Channel event celebrating "All On the Line With Joe Zee" on September 19th. We think this might be our favorite look of hers yet. Although at first we were unsure about her short cut, she seems to have gotten the styling down and we're really into her lovely loose curls. We're also glad she ditched her usual nude lip for a bright red shade -- it really makes her blue eyes pop. Keep it up, Julianne!
Winona Ryder stepped out for the premiere of Tim Burton's "Frankenweenie" on September 20th in Texas. The actress' black dress and wild hair seemed like a bit of a throwback to her goth days, but it was a bit sloppy for our liking. We know you have some amazing looks in your repertoire, Winona. Our advice: quit with the burton-esque hair and use some color on your face. You'll look more like the Winona we know and love in no time!
