Danai Gurira went through a month of sword training for her new role on "The Walking Dead" as Michonne.

Gurira joins "The Walking Dead" as the katana-wielding mystery woman in the Season 3 premiere. Viewers got a glimpse of the character at the end of Season 2 when she rescued Andrea in the forest.

In a behind-the-scenes video, Gurira shows off her new sword skills and previews what's to come of her new badass character.

"The ongoing onslaught of horror is nearby, so she has to take care of some stuff," she says. While she may have had weeks of training, Gurira says her character is self-taught. Check out the video below for more.

"The Walking Dead" premieres Sun., Oct. 14 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
