Samuel Phipps Blamed Elephant For His 7th DUI: Cops

Man Allegedly Blames Elephant For DUI

Maybe the circus was in town.

Samuel Phipps, 31, was arrested on his seventh DUI charge after getting into a car accident he blamed on an elephant, according to MyFoxPhilly.

The New Castle, Del., man was arrested Friday night when state police said his Land Rover veered off the road into a guardrail.

"The trooper who responded to the scene of the accident found that Phipps appeared to be impaired," a police statement obtained by the Philadelphia Inquirer said. "Phipps told the trooper that the accident was a result of . . . swerving to avoid an elephant he observed running in the path of his vehicle."

Cpl. John Day told Delaware Online that, to the best of his knowledge, there were no elephants running loose in New Castle that night.

Phipps was also charged with failure to provide insurance.
