Jorge Ramos didn’t have encouraging words about Mitt Romney’s efforts to reach Latino voters during his appearance on The Colbert Report Tuesday night.
When asked if the Latino vote remained in play, the Univision anchor said “not really,” citing the latest tracking poll of Hispanic voters by Latino Decisions and ImpreMedia that puts Obama at 73 percent and Romney at a new low of 21 percent.
The numbers mark a new low for Romney, but Ramos pointed out that the GOP has deeper problems with the Latino vote than the presidential nominee it picked this year: “It’s been like that for decades. Mostly Latinos tend to vote for Democrats, not for Republicans.”
Romney’s especially poor performance among Latinos owes to his hard line on immigration, Ramos said. The policy -- of making life so hard for undocumented immigrants that they “self-deport” -- that Romney pushed during the GOP primary played particularly poorly with the Hispanic electorate.
At least Romney did his best to appear Latino during a forum televised by Univision hosted by Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, Colbert pointed out. Romney’s skin looked so unnaturally orange-tan during that appearance that it fed rumors he had dyed his skin to fit in.

“He spent two days campaigning in Florida,” Ramos said. “That changes everything.”
