Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner will all co-star in David O. Russell's next film, an untitled drama originally called "American Bullshit." The quartet will play, respectively, a con artist, the man's mistress, a federal agent and a New Jersey state assemblyman

The drama -- which is reportedly based on the true story of Mel Weinberg and the ABSCAM sting operation in the late 1970s and early 1980s -- has been the source of much speculation in the trades over the last seven months. Back in March, it was reported that Russell was attached to direct with Bale starring as the con artist.

"Reports that I am attached to 'American Bullshit' are premature," Russell told Deadline.com's Mike Fleming. "It is something I am in early discussions on and I have great respect for [producer] Chuck Roven and Christian Bale. I am also developing other projects and have not chosen my next film."

In July, Variety reported that Bale was out of the film in favor of Renner. In a bit of confusing musical chairs, the Variety piece noted that Cooper would take Bale's con-artist role and that Renner would fill Cooper's part as the FBI agent. As it turns out, that isn't actually happening. Per the press release from Atlas Entertainment:

The Untitled David O. Russell Project is based on the true story of a notorious financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams), who were forced to work with an out of control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters, and politicians. At the epicenter of the entire tale, is the passionate and volatile leader of the New Jersey state assembly (Renner) who is also the local hero and mayor of impoverished Camden.

Russell has previously worked with Bale and Adams (in "The Fighter") as well as Cooper (for "Silver Linings Playbook"). This marks the first time Renner is in a Russell feature.

“David has put together an incredible ensemble of actors for what is going to be a powerful and emotional drama about one of the most memorable cast of characters in recent history,” Roven, the film's producer noted in the release.

Look for the untitled film to hit theaters in 2013. Russell's next feature, "Silver Linings Playbook," is out in November.
